Gauge Source Holder DESCRIPTION:

The device is cylindrical in shape, 7-3/8 inches (187.3 mm) in height, and 4-1/2 inches (114.3 mm) in diameter with a 4-3/4 inch (120.7 mm), square, base plate.

The steel base plate, 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick, includes 4 mounting holes 5/16 inch (7. 9 mm) in diameter.

The steel cylinder has a 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) wall and a top plate 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) thick.

These components are joined by welds.

The cylinder is filled with lead shielding, which includes two cavities.

A rectangular beam port,-1-7/16 inches (36.5 mm) by 2-7/16 inches (61.9 mm);at the outer surface of the device, tapers to its apex at the approximate position of the source in the *on" position.

The other cavity consists of a vertical hole lined with M inch (12.7 mm) inside diameter steel tubing to accommodate the source rod.

This hole is 5-1/4 inches (133.4 mm) deep and is located on the vertical axis of the cylinder.

The source is mounted at the bottom end of a source rod which is raised a distance of 2-7/16 inches (61.9 mm) to expose the source at the apex of the beam port.

The bottom portion of the source rod, 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) in diameter and 2-1/4 inches (57.2 mm) in length, consists of a Mallory-1000 metal.

This is threaded to the upper portion of the source rod consisting of a 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) square, steel pfece topped by a knob.

A stop secured to the top plate by two screws has a 17/64 inch (6.7 mm) square hole allowing passage of the 1/4 inch square portion of the rod only.

This prevents removal of the source and positions it a t the apex of the beam port.

A set screw in the stop is used to " lock" the source in either the *on" or "off" position.

The source rod may be padlocked to a lock bar (welded to the top plate) to lock the source in the "off" position.

2 A label attached to the device, opposite the beam port, indicates the-source position as " SOURCE OPEN" and " SOURCE CLOSE" by arrows.

1 EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

The radiation levels at one foot (304. 8 mm).from the-surface of the device containing 50 millicuries (185 GBq) of cesium-137 are r

- generally less than 1.5 mR/hr (15 pSv/hr) with a maximum of about

~

2.5 mR/hr (25 -pSv/hr) at a foot from the top of the surface of the device.

This includes radiation levels for both the "on" and "off": positions of the source.

4 LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

. Handling,-storage, use, transfer, and disposal To be determined by the licensing authority..

The device shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceet 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

ThisLdevice was originally approved for licensing purposes on-December 6, 1966, by the Atomic Energy-Commission - (AEC).

The Model 35-1101 gauge Source Holder is no longer manufactured and distributed by Brun Sensor Systems.

Brun Sensor Systems materials license terminated January _23, 1973, and the company was acquired by Industrial Nucleonics that same month.

There is insufficient information on file for this device to.

perform a safety evaluation.

Therefore, this certificate is being taken to inactive status without further review based on the original review and approval-issued.
