-DESCRIPTION:

l L The Models NB and'NBG are designed to be used in Moisture / Density gauge devices, and for general purpose.use (R &-D, etc.) within l- .the pressure-and temperature ranges indicated in the ANSI elassification. The Model NB (HP) is designed to be used in well Llogging tools, or c.ther applications . requiring the capsule to withstand high temperature andLpressure. The manufacturer states that'the Model NB (HP) will withstand pressure up to 25,000 psi (172.38 MPa) 'and temperatures from -57 to +595 C (-70 to 1,103 F). Both' source models are cylindrical in. shape and are s

doubly encapsulated in'304 or 316 stainless steel. The inner and outer capsules are-sealed by heliarc'(TIG). welding. The NB & NBG inner capsules have a 0.040" (1.02 mm) minimum' wall thickness, while the outer capsule'has.a~"t" wall thickness between 0.040

and 0.080" (1,02 and 2.04 mm). The NB (HP). inner capsule has a j 0.040" (1.02 mm) minimum ~ wall thickn'ss e while the outer capsule i has "T" wall minimum thickness between 0.050 and 0.120" (1.27 and '

l 3.05 mm). OD of both capsules are between 0.2C0 and 2.00" (5.08 )

and 50.8 mm), while overall length varies from 0.250 to 4" (6.35 '

to 101.6 mm). The cap for the outer capsule may be extended in

-length and be internally or externally provided with 1/4-20 NC or 12-24'NC threada.

l Radioactive source material consists of Americium oxide, radium

! sulfate,' radium bromide, polonium oxide, plutonium. oxide, and cesium-137 ceramic wafers. The americium, radium, polonium, and plutonium are uniformly mixed with beryllium powder. Also americium can be mixed with powdered boron. Source dimensions vary-with source activity and device for which intended.

' PROTOTYPE TESTING:

The Model "NB" and "NBG" sources have an ANSI classification of 133545 while Model NB (HP) has a classification of 46515 (well

logging).- The manufacturer states that prototype sources have' met the test criteria'specified in the ANSI source classification.

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

Each source is visually inspected after inner and outer capsule welding. The inner and outer capsules are leak tested using a helium pressurization bubble test, and the final source assembly is wipe tested for alpha contamination.

LIMITATIONS'AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • The source shall be possessed and used by oersons  ;

specifically licensed by the NRC or an Agreement State.  !

l SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

The Models NB, NBG, and NB (HP) sources are no longer manufactured or distributed by Gamma Industries, Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc. is no longer in business. Therefore, the

! registration certificate is being converted to an inactive L registration certificate.
