REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.- NR-8105-S-806-S DATE: Jmnury 5, 1999 PAGE 2 OF 3 DEVICE TYPE: Calibration Sources pESCRIPTION:

These sources are manufactured by CEA France. The radioactive compound in the SCS 1001 through 1007 type source is a sintered pollucite pellet (cesium sillico aluminate) with very low dissolving rate. SCS 1001 through 1007 capsules are 6.2 mm (0.24") outer diameter by 14 mm (0.55") height. Th radioactive compound for the SCS 1008 type source is cesium chloride pellets.

SCS 1008 capsules are 19 mm (0.75") outer diameter by 30 mm (1.18") height. Both types of sources are doubly encapsulated in a stainless steel capsule sealed by argon arc welding. CEA France furnishes sources and wipe test certificates to Eberline.

Eberline wipes sources before assembly into calibrator and furnishes leak test certificate to buyer of calibrator.

LABELING:

Individual sources were identified by a serial number. They were used only in the Eberline Model 1000B calibrator and are normally inaccessable to the user. (See device catalog sheet for calibrator.)

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

Both types of sources meet the requirements of "special form".

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

The Model SCS 1001 through 1008 sources are no longer manufactured or distributed by ThermoRetec and ThermoRetec has no intention to produce them any more in the future. Therefore, the registration certificate is being converted to an inactive registration certificate.

SUMMARY

(Cont'd):

The sources were originally approved for licensing purposes by the State of New Mexico and this certificate is recently returned to the NRC. Because of the limited information available on this unit, no safety evaluation of the device was performed as part of the conversion of the certificate to inactive status.
