DEVICE TYPE: Control Device For X-Ray Crawlers l

DESCRIPTION: ,

I The Master Minder Model 2 is.a right circular cylinder, I approximately_6-1/8 inches (15.56 cm) in length, excluding  ;

' carrying handle, and 5-9/16 inches (14.13 cm) in diameter. The j right circular cylinder is constructed from aluminum and houses a

-depleted uranium. shield which is also a right circular cylinder,. I approximately 3-3/4 inches (9.53 cm) long by 2-7/8 inches (7.3

cm)-in diameter. The depleted uranium shield is r sitioned
horizontally in the middle of the aluminum housing ay an aluminum )

support secured'with pins. A carrying handle is attached to the

~

l top plate of the device, and the bottom plate of the device has a I'

-1/2Linch-(1.27 cm) deep "V"~ shape indention'to facilitate placing the device on a curved-surface. .To one side of the' device is

-attached a lock. box which is used-to secure the source in the

shielded position. A source stop on the source assembly and a I lock insert in the lock box prevent the source assembly from ~

1 coming through the lock box. side of the device. The shield has a l blind source tube, so that the source assembly cannot come out j the opposite side of the shield. The source holder is l constructed from. stainless steel cable and a tungsten rod  !

(Attachment 2). The 2 inch (5.08 cm) long tungsten rod has a I aGamma Industries Model VD(HP) source silver-soldered to one end )'

and~a 3-1/4 inch (8.26 cm) stainless steel cable silver-soldered

.toitheLcable-approximately 1 inch from the source holder, and a brass handling knob is silver-soldered to the end of the j stainless 1 steel cable. I i

I LABELING:

'The Master Minder Model 2Lbears the' manufacturer's label which specifies the' isotope andicapacity. The label also specifies-the model number, serial-number,- and source number. A radiation caution symbol is-displayed-on the right side-of the label.

The device is al'so labeled.with'two (2) Danger, Radioactive

. Material labels,-which contain instructions:to notify the

. manufacturer or civil authorities.

SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE.

'NO.: NR-300-D-877-S :DATE: N 2 1 1998' PAGE 3 OF 5 DEVICE' TYPE: Control Device-For X-Ray Crawlers: l CONDITIONS OF-NORMAL USE:

The.MasterLMinder Model 2.is designed.primarily~as a control 1 device for X-ray crawlers. However, it may-also be used in any l other. application where beam radiation is desired. This device l imay be used only by persons specifichily licensed by the U.S. NRC l or an Agreement. State.

I EXTERNAL' RADIATION LEVELS:

A-survey ~of the prototype. device loaded with 220 mci'(8.14 GBq) of Cs-137 was performed using a G-M survey meter that was  ;

calibrated against Cs-137. A maximum exposure rate of 80 mr/hr l on contact was found at the bottom ~of:the device near the beam

' port. . At 6 inches (15.24 cm) from this spot, the exposure rate was 10 mr/hr and at 1 meter (3.28.ft), the exposure rate was less than 1 mr/hr.

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND: CONTROL:

'The Master Minder Model 2 is manufactured and tested according to

~ Gamma Industrie's quality assure.nce program for manufacturing as l outlined in Gamma Industries " Quality-Assu'rance Program for Radioactive Material Packages," U.S. NRC-Approval No. 0010, expiration date 11/30/84.
