REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO.: NR-300-S-864-S DATE: PAGE 2 OF 6 OCT 21 1998 SEALED SOURCE TYPE: Industrial Radiography Source Assembly DESCRIPTION:

The Gamma Industries Model "T" series source assemblies are designed for use only in Technical Operation exposure devices, as shown in the attached pigtail selection chart (Limitation and/or Other Considerations of Use section). The first character in the source model designation indicates that the source assemblies are designed for use in Technical Operation exposure devices. The second character is a' code for the dimension of the source assembly. The' third (last)' character-in the source model number 1

-designates the type of connector. "A" indicates the Gamma l Industries long Saf-T-Key connector, "G" indicates the Gamma  !

Industries short Saf-T-Key, and "T" indicates the Tech-Ops i connector.

All iridium sources are singly encapsulated while all Cobalt sources are doubly encapsulated. The minimum wall thickness of the outer encapsulation in each case is 0.030" (0.76 mm). All source capsules are fabricated from type 304 or 316 stainless steel using a heliarc (TIG) welding technique. All source assemblies, except the T-7-A and T-7-T, use stainless steel end-caps for capsule closure. The T-7-A and T-7-T has two discreet sources, separated by a distance of two (2) inches (5.08 cm).

The source capsule closest to the connector in the assembly uses a side-weld closure, and the source capsule closest to the connector in the assembly uses a side-weld closure, and the i source capsule farthest from the connector in the assembly uses an end-cap closure. The pigtail connector, source capsule, and locking ball on all source assemblies are crimped either to '/16 inch Teleflex cable or 1/8" (3.18 mm) stainless steel cable.

Pigtail dimensional tolerances are maintained at 16" (140.64 cm).

LABELING:

The source capsules are not large enough to allow direct labeling; however, the exposure device which contains the source capsule is labeled. For additional labeling information, please refer to'the particular exposure device in which the source is to be used.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

'The Gamma Industries Model "T" series source assemblies are

' designed for use in the Technical Operations, and industrial radiography exposure devices shown in the eigtail selection

-chart.

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

The "T" series source assembly consists of a single or double encapsulated universal capsule. The manufacturer states that prototype sources have met the criteria specified in ANSI publication N542-1977 and have been assigned a classification of ANSI 77E43515.

This source series also has an IAEA Certificate of Competent

. Authority, Special Form Radioactive Material Encapsulation,

' Certificate Number USA /0166/S Revision 1. Based on prototype test data these designs are expected to retain containment integrity under accident conditions most likely to occur during normal use or transportation.

OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL-I In addition to the other tests, each pigtail assembly is I subjected to a 180 lb. (81.65 kg) pull test prior to radioactive j material insertion and subjected to a wipe test after the material is sealed in the capsule. If the results of the wipe ,

tests are doubtful, then a hot water bubble test is performed. I No source will be shipped if removable contamination exceeds l 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq). Source activities are checked against I a standard by using an ion chamber. A decay chart and source tag are supplied with each source, providing information concerning the activity and leak test results.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • Series "T" sources shall be possessed and used by specific licensces of the U.S. NRC or Agreement States.

Series "T" sealed sources shall not be subjected to environmental or other conditions of use which exceed ANSI classification 77E43515.

  • Series "T" sources shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed six (6) months using techniques approved by the licensing authority and capable of detecting at least 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.
  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.
  • This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.
  • Series "T" source assemblies shall be used only in the

, following radiographic exposure devices:

SEALED SOURCE TYPE: Industrial Radiography Source Assembly LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE (Cont'd):

      • This source assembly does not have a locking ball. The Model 402 must be returned to Gamma Industries for loading.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

The Model "T" Series source is no longer manufactured or distributed by Gamma Industries, Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc.

is no longer in business. Therefore, the registration certificate is being converted to an inactive registration certificate. i The source was originally approved-for licensing purposes by the Louisiana Division of Radiation Control. NRC attempted to obtain copies of all information submitted by the registrant in support of the evaluation. However, NRC could not locate all the information. Therefore, no safety evaluation of the source was performed as part of the conversion of the certificate to inactive status.
