a REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE-NO.: NR-300-D-862-S DATE: OCT 21 1998 PAGE 2 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Radiographic Exposure Device DESCRIPTION:

The device consists of a depleted uranium shield and polyurethane filler enclosed in an 1/8" (3.18 nmi) steel housing constructed by rolling a right circular cylinder, and arc-welding two circular endpieces.

A zircaloy "S" tube extends through the uranium shield. At one end is a lock box through which the source pigtail' cable and male half of the quick disconnect-connect connector protrude. The "A" used in the suffix of the model number indicates a modified lock box. The purpose of the change in the design of the lock box is primarily one of safety, which assures that the lock plunger cannot be depressed into the lock position without the source being in a shielded position. It also requires that a connection be made before the source can be cranked out into the exposed position, since it is necessary to apply back pressure by use of the control cable to permit the plunger to be placed in an unlocked position. The drive cable conduit (30 f t. [9.14 m]  ;

minimum) is threaded into the lock box after removing the '

protective screw cap.

l The depleted uranium shield (approximately 201 lb. (91 kg]) is l secured in place by two steel webs inside the steel cylinder. l The casting is coated with approximately 1" (2.54 cm) of asbestos cement for fire protection of the uranium shield in the event that the device has to be opened with a torch; the polyurethane filler acts as a cushion between the casting and the housing.

The complete device is mounted on wheels which allows easy movement of the device. The tires and supporting boss are welded to the device housing, and two (2) 1-1/2" (3.81 cm) lifting eyes are welded to the top of the device.

The outside exterior dimensions are 16" (40.64 cm) in diameter, by 12" (30.28'cm) high, excluding the handle and wheels.

LABELING:

4 The-device bears the manufacturers label which specifies the i device contains 201-lb. (91 kg) of-depleted uranium. The label j also specifies the isotope, activity, date of calibration, source l seal number and states, " Danger, Do Not Handle, Radioactive i

l CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

~

The manufacturer furnishes an operating and. maintenance manual which includes step-by-step instructions for using the exposure .

device. This device is very similar in design to the Gamma

' Industries Century exposure device, the difference.being that the Gammatron 50A is-larger and more heavily shielded.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

The source within the device is-greater than 4" (10.16 cm) to the outer surface of'the device. Utilizing a source containing

-36.0 Ci (1.33'TBq) of Cobalt-60, the'following dose rates were

. The license for radioactive material should include Provisions for 201 lb. (91 kg) of depleted uranium.

  • The device shall be possessed and used by persons specifically11icensed by the NRC or an Agreement State.

. Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.

  • This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

The Model Gammatron 50-A device is no longer manufactured or distributed by Gamma Industries, Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc.

is no longer in business. Therefore, the registration certificate is being converted to an inactive registration certificate.

The device was originally approved for licensing purposes by the Louisiana Division of Radiation Control. NRC attempted to obtain copies of all information submitted by the registrant in support of the evaluation. However, NRC could not locate all the information. Therefore, no safety evaluation of the device was performed as part of the conversion of the certificate to inactive status.
