REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE OCT 21 1998 NO.: NR-300-S-874-S DATE:

PAGE 2 OF 5 SEALED SOURCE TYPE: Radiography Source DESCRIPTION:

The Gamma Industries Model PL-3 source assembly is designed for use in the Gulf Nuclear Model 10X exposure device.

The Gamma

. Industries Model PL-4 source assembly is designed for use in the l

Source Production and Equipment Company,. SPEC CHECK Model II exposure device and the Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory Model PTL j

125U and 230U.

Both sources are doubly encapsulated and constructed of Type 304 or Type 316 stainless steel using heliarc (TIG) welding.

The wall thickness is maintained at a-minimum of 0.30" (7.62 mm) and is provided with a threaded body for securing in the exposure device.

LABELING:

The source capsules are not large enough to allow direct labeling; however, the exposure device which contains the source capsule is labeled.

For additionalzlabeling information, precise

-refer to the particular exposure device in which the source is to be_used.

DIAGRAM:

See Attachment 1.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

The PL-3 AND PL-4 series source assemblies are designed for use in the Gulf Nuclear Model 10X, SPEC CHECK II, and PTL Model 125U and 230U industrial radiography exposure devices.

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

The source has a classification of ANSI 77E43515 as described in 7WSI publication N542-1977.

The manufacturer states that prototype sources have met the test criteria specified in the

Theidose rate for Ir-192 is 5.9 R/hr per curie at l' (30.38 cm).

QUALITY-ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

)

Each source;is wipe 1 tested after-the capsule is welded.

If the results.of~the leak' test ore doubtful, then a hot. water bubble test is conducted.- No source will be shipped.if removable contamination' exceeds 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq)..

Sourc'e activities'are checked against'a standard by using an ion-

' chamber.

A' decay chart.and source tag are supplied with each source, providing information concerning the activity and leak test results.

1 LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

The Model PL-3-and PL-4.shall be possessed and used by to specific licensees of United States Nuclear Regulatory l

+

. Commission.or Agreement States.

l

These sealedLsource designs shall not be subjected to j

environmental or other. conditions of use which exceed ANSI-classification 77E43515.

L J+: These sources.shallLbe leak tested at intervals not to.

~!

O exceed six-(6)lmonths using-techniques approved by the licensing' authority and capable of detecting 0.0051 microcurie (185'Bq) of removable contamination.

-SAFETY ANALYSIS ~

SUMMARY

The Models PL-3 and PL-4:s'ources are no longer manufactured or distributed'by Gamma Industries, Inc. and Gamma' Industries, Inc.

is no longer in business.

Therefore, the~ registration certificate is being converted to an inactive registration certificate.

~

'The' sources were originally approved for licensing purposes by the' Louisiana Division of Radiation Control.

NRC attempted to s

obtain copies of all.information submitted by the registrant in

, support of the' evaluation.

However,.NRC could not locate all the linformation.

Therefore, no safety evaluation of the sources was iperformed as part of the conversion of the certificate to

' inactive status.
