.pEVICE TYPE: Gamma Instrument Calibrator DE1;RIPTION:

The.Eberline Model 1000 B Multiple Source Gamma Calibrator is designed to-provide a self-contained, variable intensity beam of radiation for~the calibration of gamma radiation detection

-instruments. The unit consists basically of three parts: 1) a shielded' compartment or safe for enclosing the instruments to be calibrated, 2) a source shield and beaming device which contains two source drawers, and 3) a castered platform which supports the t- instrument compartment and source shield. The device has a base dimension of 34 inches (86.36 cm) in width by 44 inches (1.12 m) in length and stands approximately 67 inches (1.70 m) in height.

It weighs approximately 3400' pounds (1,542.21 kg).

The' instrument compartment or safe is constructed of 4 inches (10.16 cm) of lead shielding at the top and 2 inches (5.08 cm) on all other sides. The front of the device'is equipped with a hinged door which provides access for insertion of the instruments. A 4 inch (10.16'cm) lead glass window located on the hinged door permits viewing of the instruments during calibration. The safe has 5 penetrations: a 4 inch (10.16 cm) hole in the base which aligns with the source shield collimator; two 1-1/8 inch (2.86 cm) holes in the left side at 1 inch (2.54 cm),and 17 inches (43.18 cm), respectively, above the base for insertion of detector probes; a 1-1/8 inch (2.86 cm) hole in the right side:at 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) above the base for access of flexible mechanical cables for calibration adjustments; and a 1/4 inch (0.64 cm)' penetration for a 100 volt lamp cord. The two holes in the left side, when not in use, are closed with solid steel plugs and secured with a common padlock.

The cylindrical source shield is a lead filled, carbon steel container that is 12 inches -(30.48 cm) in diameter by 24-21/32 inches (62.63 cm) in length. It has two horizontal cavities which house'the two source' drawers. Both drawers move perpendicularly across the axis of the radiation beam collimator, thus allowing a varying gamma field. The source drawers are stainless steel tubing 0.688 inch (1.75 cm) OD and hold Eberline SCSl1001 through 1008 sources (see catalog sheet).

-DEVICE TYPE: Gamma Instrument Calibrator.

DESCRIPTION (Cont'd):

Each drawer-contains up to four sources. A back plate is attached which. serves to positively stop withdrawal of the source drawer from the~ calibrator. The manufacturer supplies the source shield separately in a DOD approved specification 20 WC-4 container.

The instrument compartment door has a lock assembly which mechanically locks this door. The. key is held captive at such times until the door is closed and locked. The key may then be released for use with a second lock assembly which mechanically unlocks a bolt holding the two source drawers immobile-in the

" safe" position. The key is held captive in this mechanism until the drawers 1are returned to the " safe" position and locked. The

-positions of the source drawers are indicated by " Safe" and

" Exposed" lights on the front panel'of the unit which are activated by the lock bolt which is in direct physical contact with two_microswitches reprcsenting each drawer. There are lights also on.the front panel which indicate which sources of either drawer are in use at any.one time.

DIAGRAM:

See Attachments 1 and 2.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

A calibrator loaded with 182 Ci (6.73 TBq) of cesium-137 was surveyed and found to produce surface radiation levels less than.

2.5 mr/hr;(25 pSv/hr) with the two source drawers in the fully

" exposed" position with ports closed. With the upper port open u and sources. exposed a reading of 30 mr/hr (300 pSv/hr) was

.obtained. With the source drawers in the " safe" position, the maximumEsurface radiation. level detected was 0.5 mr/hr (5 pSv/hr)

-around the unit.

REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.: NR-8105-D-805-S DATE: Januaor 5,1999 PAGE 4 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Gamma' Instrument Calibrator LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

A set of instruction procedures is provided with each unit which contains, in general, proceduras relating to the operation and radiation safety of' unit.

The set of instructions procedures described above may be referenced by the-applicant with respect to the operating procedures he plans to follow during use of the unit, in lieu of providing his own. A license condition requesting a radiation survey of this unit is not considered necessary. Wipe tests at six month intervals are indicated.

SAFETY ANALYSIS SUMMAR_.X:

The Model 1000 B is no longer manufactured or distributed by ThermoRetec and ThermoRetec has no intention to produce them any more in the future. Therefore, the registration certificate is being converted to an insctive registration certificate.

The device was originally approved for licensing purposes by the State of New Mexico and this certificate is recently returned to the NRC. Because of the limited information available on this unit, no safety evaluation of the device was performed as part of the conversion of the certificate to inactive status.

j NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.c. 20565-0001 January 5, 1999

%, . . . . . ,f Mr. Ed Vigil Radiation Safety Officer ThermoRetec 7021 Pan American Freeway, NE Albuquerque, NM 87109

Dear Mr. Vigil:

The Environment Department of the State of New Mexico relinquished its authority to conduct sealed source and device evaluations earlier this year and transferred this function to the U.S.

Nuclear regulatory Commission. With this transfer, the State of New Mexico had sent to NRC eighteen registration certificates (five devices and thirteen sources).

The meeting was held at ThermoRetec office on December 16,1998 to discuss these products' current status. At the end of meeting, you requested six registration certificates shown in the Table 1 be transferred to inactive status by the fact that these devices and source are no longer manufactured by ThermoRetec and ThermoRetec does not have any intention to produce them in the future.

Please review the registration certificates (copy enclosed) in its entirety and notify us immediately if there are any errors or omissions.

Further, please note that in accordance with NUREG-1556, Volume 3, Section 5.1.1,

" Calibration and Reference Standards", calibration and reference sources, that do not exceed certain limits, may be licensed without review by IMNS and issuance of a registration certificate.

The twelve sources listed in Table 2 meet this criteria. Therefore, the NRC is removing these sources registrations from the Sealed Source and Device Registry. It is our understanding that none of these sources are listed on any known licenses, therefore, removal of the registration certificates should not pose any problem.

If you have any questions call me at (301) 415-5787 or Ms. Michele Burgess at (301) 415-5868.
