DEVICE' TYPE: Pipewall1 Thickness Gauge

- DESCRIPTION:

' The' device is a right circular cylinder,-approximately 5-1/2"

. (13.97'cm) tall and 4-3/4" (12.07 cm) in diameter,'with a. lock

- box-attached to one side andl consists of a depleted uranium-

shield enclosed in a stainless steel housing. The housing has

' two attaching rings,-one machined into the surface at the bottom of'the device and one 1 inch from.the top. The top and lock box are heliarc (TIG) welded to the device. The cover plate is aluminum and is bolted to the device using six 1/4 - 20, 1" (2.54'cm)~ bolts.. The cover plate holds in place a tungsten collimator, which has a 3/16" (4.76 mm) diameter beam port.

The depleted uranium shield is a right circular cylinder with'the top taking a hemispherical dome configuration. The shield is-3.842" (9.76 cm) in diameter by 4.156" (10.56 cm) in length. A snap ring holds the source capsule securely into a tungsten insert which has been pressed into.a hole centered on the outside edge of a 2.187" (5.55 cm) diameter by 1" (2.54 cm) thick depleted uranium wheel. The source wheel is rotated by a tungsten shaft which is 0.375" (9.53 mm) in diameter at the wheel and 0.5" '(1.27 cm) in diameter at the locking mechanism. The wheel 11s secured to the shaft with a Woodruff key.

.The source position is controlled.by rotation of the tungsten

- shaft. In the shielded position the source is 180 degrees from the cover plate and oriented towards the dome.part of.the depleted uranium shield. A plunger-type lock, which has been-

' modified by the manufacturer for this particular application,-is

. incorporated to lock the source in either the " exposed" or the

" shielded" positions. The tungsten shaft is fitted with a ,

knurled knob which has an arrow engraved to point to the "off" or j "on". position. The "off" and "on" positions are stamped into the front of the lock box to indicate when the source is exposed or shielded. 'The sources can be locked in the "on" position so that while the unit is being operated for pipe inspection, the source

,will remain in a rigid position with no movement of the source to affect the electronic readout.

NO.: .NR-300-D-871-S 'DATE: OCT 21 1998 PAGE 3 OF'S

. DEVICE TYPE: PipewallThicknessjGauge LABELING:

The. device bears the manufacturer's name plate'which specifies:

that it contains approximately 26 pounds (11.8 kg) of depleted uranium. The' plate also specifies the isotope and the maximum

activity permissible. A second plate is attached to the device which specifies the source manufacturer, model number, serial number, activity, and date of calibration. Two other identical

. labels with the conventional radiation. caution symbol state Danger, Do Not Handle --Radioactive Material, Notify Gamma Industries, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, or Civil Authorities."

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

The device is intended primarily as a source holder to be used in a pipewall thickness gauge. When used in this manner the

~ operator.should receive only scatter radiation. The radiation

--intensity will vary around the inspection machine depending on pipe size, pipe elevation, material thickness, type and distance of other materials in.the area. The only way to determine the level of scatter radiation is to perform a radiation survey.

After unlocking the device, the source is exposed-by manually

' rotating the control knob 180 degrees clockwise. To secure the

source,Lthe-control knob is rotated 180 degrees counterclockwise and:the lock plunger depressed. Positive stops are provided for the " exposed" and " shielded" positions.

l EXTERNAL' RADIATION LEVELS:

With a 500 millicurie (18.5 GBq) Cesium-137 source in the shielded position, a survey was performed using a Ludlum Model j III G-M survey meter calibrated against a 100 millicuries 1

-(3.7 GBq) Cesium-137 source. With the source in the shielded l

Lposition, the highest exposure rate at the surface of the device was 5 mr/hr. The manufacturer also supplied a radiation profile l which indicated that the maximum exposure rate at 6" (15.24 cm)

Lwas 0.9. mr/hr and the maximum exposure rate at 1 m- (3.28 f t) was O.25 mr/hr.-

SUMMARY

The Pipeliner Model 300idevice is no longer manufactured or distributed by Gamma. Industries,.Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc.

Lis no longer in business- . Therefore, fthe registration certificate is being converted to'an-inactive-registration certificate.

The device was originally approved for licensing purposes by the Louisiana. Division of Radiation Control. NRC attempted to obtain copies of all information submitted by the registrant in support Jof-the evaluation. However,' NRC could not locate all the-information. Therefore, no safety evaluation of the device was l performed as part of the~ conversion of the certificate'to

inactive. status.-
