l l , , MONTHLY STATUS REPORT-SEPTEMBER 1999 Docket No. 50-160 Georgia Tech Research Reactor (GTRR) Decommissioning Program ,

October 4,1999 A. General The GTRR remains under a safe shutdown condition. The reactor facility is in compliance with its license conditions and current technical specifications (10CFR50.51(b)).

l B. Activities for the month of September 1999

1. The decommissioning contractor submitted his final project schedule. A copy of this schedule is attached. Please note the forecast date for the start of the indenendent survey by USNRC is 04 July 2000.

We will highlight any future changes to this milestone date should they occur.

L 2. The GTRR Technical Safety Review Committee (TSRC) held regular bi-weekly meetings on i September 13 and 27 to review plans and procedures submitted by the Decommissioning Contractor. j l

3. The following plans and procedures have been submitted by the decommissioning contractor and l are undergoing review and comment resolution by the TSRC:

e Initial Radiological Survey Plan l

• Radiological Survey Procedures

• Waste Management Plan e Waste Management Procedures e Health and Safety Plan e Health and Safety Procedures 1

! 4. The TSRC is reviewing a draft procedure that would allow the TSRC to approve changes to the decommissioning plan under 10 CFR 50.59. The proposed procedure would replace the existing GTRR Procedure 4200.

5. The GTRR decommissioning project was presented as a special topic to the Atlanta Chapters of the Health Physics Society and the American Nuclear Society j > int meeting held on the Georgia Tech campus on September 21.

C. Planned Activities in C rober 1999.

1. Continue review and approval of the decommissioning contractor's procedure and plan submittals.

2. Award a contract to renovate a room in the Neely building for the temporary relocation of the campus radiological waste storage area (the " barn") outside of the decommissioning project limits.

3. Conduct an information briefing on the GTRR decommissioning project to the Home Park Community {mprovement Association. The briefing will be held at 7:00 p.m., October 12,1999 in the Union
