Failure of Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps to Start Automatically Following Turbine and Reactor Trip .

The licensee reported to the Region V (Walnut Creek, California) office of OIE the failure of both the turbine-driven and the diesel-driven auxiliary feedwater pumps to start automatically following a trip of the main station turbine-generator and reactor from 60% power on Sunday, February 29. Other safety related systems of the plant per- '

formed normally, and no threat to public safety resulted from the occurrence.

The Region V office has arranged to meet with PGE prior to the resumption of power operation. The meeting (scheduled for March $) will include dis-cussion of the actions taken by PGE to correct the equipment malfunctions associated with the occurrence of February 29, as well as additional

, measures planned by PCE to demonstrate acceptable reliability of the -

l Auxiliary Feedwater System prior to the resumption of reactor power operation.

The licensee informed the Region V office on March 2 of a Western d y J Union Mailgram received from the State of Oregon Department of Energy /

on March 1 asking that that State agency receive assurance that the auxiliary feedwater pumps are operational in accordance with NRC

, technical specification requirements prior to their resuming power f p

j operation.

p This occurrence has not attracted the attention of the news media 2_

according to the licensee. No press release is planned.

OIE (Region V) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Plant Superintendent at approximately 3:00 p.m. on March 1, i 1976.
