SUBJECT:

POTENTIAL FOOT E..P0SURE OF 83 REM On April 17, 1987, at 12:55 PM, PDT, the licensee reported to the HQ duty officer that based on portable radiation monitoring instrument readings from a speck of radioactive material on the protective shoe cover of a plant worker involved in performing a radiation survey in the reactor cavity on April 17, 1987, the 18.75 rem extremity exposure limit per calendar quarter expressed in 10 CFR 20.101 may have been exceeded.

The licensee has stopped work in the reactor containment building and is initiating an investigation and radiological review to establish the actual exposure and measures necessary to permit resumption of work.

This speck of radioactive material produced a gama dose rate of 300 rem per hour on contact and 20 rem per hour at a distance of one foot.

This exposure may be related to the dispersal of irradiated fuel fragments discussed in RV-PNO-87-29 and 29A.

A NRC Region V Radiation Specialist is on site monitoring the licensee's actions and will reuain onsite through the weekend.

The licensee plans to issue a press release.

This information is current as of 2:00 PM, April 17, 1987.
