. Georgia Tech Research Reactor Decommissioning Program 4 Monthly Status Report ror April 1998 )

A. General The GTRR remains under a safe shutdown condition. The reactor facility is in compliance with its license conditions and current technical specifications (10CFR50.51(b)). - 1

' B. ' Activities for the Month of April 1998

1. Discussions continue with the State of Georgia, Office of Planning and Budget, and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, regarding the Financial Letter of Intent. A staff visit by the Office of Planning and Budget to the GTRR is scheduled for May 1998 to brief them on the decommissioning project.
2. Ongoing review of the Radiological and llazardous Characterization Report prepared by NES, Inc.
3. Ongoing review of the Decommissioning Plan prepared by NES, Inc.

C. Planned Activities'

1. Finalize the D; aft Decommissioning Plan and submit to USNRC. The Technical Safety Review Committee is scheduled to review and formally approve the Plan on May 29,1998. Pending ,

receipt of the Letter of Financial Intent, the Plan will be submitted to NRC in June 1998. '

2. Ship the heavy water back to DOE-Aiken. We received drums for shipment of heavy water on 18 Ma-ch 1998. Procedures have be:n written by the Neely Nuclear Research Center and these I

procedures will be presented to the Technical Safety Committee on 29 May 1998, for approval. Pending approval of procedures, the heavy water will be shipped in June 1998.
