March 5, 1976 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -PNO-76-36 This preifminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation ,

and is basically all that is known by OIE staff as of 4:00 P.M. on date of this notification. IT SHOULD BE SPECIFICALLY NOTED THAT THIS NOTIFICATION MAY CONTAIN INFORMATION THAT LATER MAY BE DETERMINED TO BE INACCURATE OR INCONSISTENT. AN OFFICE OF INSPECTION AND ENFORCEMENT NOTIFICATION OF AN INCIDENT OR OCCURRENCE (BLUE SHEET) SUBSEQUENTLY WILL BE ISSUED IF WARRANTED.

ELECTRICAL FIRE IN TURBINE BUILDING MOTOR CONTROL CENTER An electrical fire occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on March 4 in the No. 56 Motor Control Center (MCC) located in the plant's -

i Turbin Building. No safety related equipment was powered by the MCC.

~ The fire was observed promptly by a plant employee in the area and extinguished within approximately one minute by the employee with l support of the plant's fire brigade. Damage from the fire was

limited to approximately 50 % of MCC No. 56.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the licensee, in-cluding the potential of generic significance.

t Preliminary assessment by the licensee is that repairs to the MCC will not extend the length of the current shutdown, which was

, commenced on February 29. -

l The licensee is planning to make a press release on March 5, 1976.

Region V (Walnut Creek, Calif.) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Assistant Plant Superintendent at 9:30 a.m. on March 5, 1976. .h
