Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II 101 Marietta St., N. W., Suite 2900 Atlanta, Georgia 30323 Attention: Dr. J. Nelson Grace, Regional Administrator

Dear Dr. Grace:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 2 Docket No. 50-417 File: 0260/0511/0512 PRD-82/14, Interim Report #2 -

Unit 2, Sheared Bolts on Diesel Generator Rear Crankcase Cover AECM-85/2-0005

Reference:

(1) AECM-85/2-0002, 1-28-85 (2) AECM-83/0386, 7-5-83 Per Reference (2) Mississippi Power & Light Company (MP&L) stated a final report for Unit 2 Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) 82/14 was expected to be submitted by January 30, 1985. MP&L notified Mr. Robert Carroll of your office on March 18, 1985, that due to reduced construction activities on Unit 2, a determination for applicability to Unit 2 would not be possible until after resumption of normal construction activities on Unit 2. In addition, MP&L agreed to document an extension request in a letter to NRC Region 2 by March 22, 1985.

MP&L previously determined this deficiency was reportable under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.55(e) and 10 CFR 21 for the Unit 1 Division II Dinel Generator and provided a final report per Reference (2). As indicated in Reference (2) it remains indeterminate as to whether this deficiency is applicable to the Unit 2, Division I and II Diesel Generators. Per Reference (1), MP&L requested extensions for Unit 2 PRDs related to the Standby Diesel Generators but inadvertently did not list PRD-82/14 in that letter.

Based on the explanations provided in Reference (1), MP&L requests that further updates on PRD-82/14 be deferred until after resumption of normal construction a- ivities on Unit 2.

Yours truly, hh 7 PDR L. F. Dale Director EBS/SHH:vog cc (See Next Page)
