Centlemen:

This report is to inform you that a 14 day 1.5miting Condition for operation (LCO) expired November 12, 1991, on the fire detoction instrumentation for the Unit 2 Reactor Building refuel floor (117' olevation) . The LCO was initiated at 1830 on October 29, 1991, following spurious alarms on 1 or more of 34 ionization type fire detectors located on the 117' elevation. A firewatch has been stationed to monitor the area while the source of the alarm continues to be investigated. The LCO was not cancelled within the 14 day LCO period because the source of the spurious alarms could not be determined within this time period. _

It is believed the cause of the spurious alarms is due to the susceptibility of ionization type fire detectors to dust stirred up by refuel floor crane operation. I' nit 2 is in a refueling outage and the crano is in extensive use.

Identifying specific detector (s) causing the alarms is complicated by their location - SS' above the refueling floor. The Brunswick Nuclear ?roject has recognized that testing and repair of these dotectors can present a serious personnel hazard. Accordingly, plans to replace the existing system with devices which can be serviced more readily are in development. Implementation is now expected for June of 1993 on Unit 1, and December 1993 on Unit 2.
