Etters, Pennsylvania 1731'

, January 22, 1981 Representative William F. Goodling House Office Building i vaahington, DC 20515 g,%.

Dear Mr. Goodling,

Ia, the face of all evidence to the contrary, we are still being asked to accept the lie that nuclear power is cafe and affordable. Cur electric rates have increased even faster than the rate of' inflation. The value of our property has decreased, whil property values elsewhere-have increased. In this sonth of January, so far there have.

been three kne_ws instances 111matrating Mat Ed's incompetense and the uncertain condition of ,)3jtg reactors. It is deeply distressing to see and hear those who are financed' by taxes and by industries with nuclear connections urging the NRC to allow.-

the restart of Unit I. No person capable of *MM g and renuning could suggest that Met Ed can and will be able and responsible in the operation of Unit I. To have to- li-here- and to realise daily that we are in cle.se proximity to a nuclear waste dumping ground that was never designed, constructed or licensed for this purpose, and to have those anxious realisations denied by those who are responsible for this debacle is rapidly becoming mere saboarable. We mest strongly urge you to act to keep Three Mile Island closed.

l l We consider the NEC's proposals for the deregulation of, radioactive wat tes

.(45 F167081 and 70874) to be abhorrent. We are adamantly opposed to disposal of radioactive vastes in sewage systems and in landfills. Proposing to mix contaminated metals with uncontaminated setals which will then be used in the manufacture of toys, appliances, furniture, cooking utensils and other consumer items is unquestionably a threat to public health and safety.

'Another, but related, concern is the inpasse regarding the radioactive water presently stored at Three Mile Island. Donald 3rinkman, of the NEC's TMI Program Office, shares the public concern regarding the stored water, and urges the Depart-sent of Energy to take possession of these wastes. However, it has been : CS policy to handle only military wastes. Clearly Congress has a responsibility to solve such nuclear-related problems. Ve again urge you to take positive action in the public interest.

Sincerely yours c'?/Jw f f d. -
