SLNRC 80 28 FILE: 0491.10.2 SUBJ: Centrifugal Charging Pump Operation Following Secondary Side High Energy Line Rupture l

Mr. Boyce Grier j Director, Region I U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406 Docket Nos.: STN 50-482, STN 50-483, STN 50-485, STN 50-486 Ref: Westinghouse letter (T.M. Anderson), NS-TMA-2245, to USNRC (V. Stello), dated May 8,1980, same subject

Dear Mr. Grier:

On May 8,1980, SNUPPS informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region I Office of Inspection and Enfarcement, of a potential deficiency in-volving centrifugal charging pump operation following a secondary side line rupture. The infomation was communicated by telephone to Mr.

Richard McGaughy of your staff pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e).

The referenced letter provided detailed infomation on the deficiency, described plant-specific calculations that are required, and discussed possible corrective modifications. The SNUPPS plants will have qualified, safety-related pressurizer power-operated relief valves. Thus the pro- ,

blem described by Westinghouse does not appear to be applicable to SNUPPS.

However, additional evaluation is required on the response of a SNUPPS plant to the transient described in the referenced letter. This evaluation is expected to be complete in about one month and the NRC will be inform-ed of the results.

Very truly yours, 4W4M
