Both motor-driven auxiliary feedwater pumps automatically started upon trip of both main feedwater pumps to maintain steam generator water levels.A normal plant shutdown to Mode 3 was then accomplished.

This test initiates a manual trip of the main turbine while operating at near full power.A reactor trip is, therefore, expected to occur', thus, the reactor trip is part of a pre-planned sequence during testing is not reportable (as per 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(ii) and 10CFR50.73(a)(2)(iv)).

The plant was at 97.5X reactor power and 840 Mwe net generator output, with normal temperatures and pressures.

The main feedwater system was in operation supplying 4.0 x 10E+06 ibm/hr to each steam generator.

The main feedwater pump discharge valves were throttled to maintain an appropriate differential pressure across the main feedwater regulating valves.The turbine trip was initiated at 0206.Immediately following the trip, heater drain pump 1B tripped, and approximately five seconds later, heater drain pump 1A tripped, along with both condensate booster pumps and both main feedwater pumps.Both motor-driven auxiliary feedwater pumps automatically started as required on a loss of both main feedwater pumps.The plant was stabilized in Mode 3 at normal temperatures and pressure following the turbine and reactor trips.The auxiliary feedwater system was being monitored as per the test procedure, and the operator manually throttled the flow to control steam generator levels.No other safeguards features actuated during or subsequent to the event.CAUSE The heater drain pump trips were caused by low net positive suction head (NPSH)which resulted directly from the turbine trip.The heater drain pumps have the number four feedwater heaters as the suction source.Extraction steam supply to the heaters is isolated upon a turbine trip, which reduced the pressure in the heaters such that the low NPSH trip setpoint of the heater drain pumps was reached.The condensate booster pump trips were caused by high discharge pressure.Upon the turbine and reactor trips, the feedwater flow demand is reduced and the main feedwater regulating valves throttle closed.The condensate booster.pumps are required to reduce speed and maintain the pressure at the main feedwater pump suction at 400 psig.The speed controller does not respond quickly enough for this transient, so the high discharge trip setpoint was reached.The main feedwater pumps trip automatically when the condensate booster pumps trip due to an interlock.
