UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 April 3, 2018 LICENSEE: Duke Energy Progress, LLC FACILITY: Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MARCH 27, 2018, PRESUBMITTAL MEETING WITH DUKE ENERGY PROGRESS, LLC TO DISCUSS A PROPOSED RELIEF REQUEST FOR SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNIT 1 (EPID L-2017-LRM-0303)

On March 27, 2018, a Category 1 public meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of Duke Energy Progress, LLC (the licensee), over a teleconference in Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a proposed relief request from Title 1O of the Code of Federal Regulations ( 10 CFR),

Section 50.55a for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 (HNP). The meeting notice and agenda, dated March 8, 2018, are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under Accession No. ML18067A137. The meeting slides are available in ADAMS under Accession No. ML18087A064. A list of attendees is enclosed.

During the pre-submittal meeting, Duke Energy explained that due to the reactor vessel head replacement planned in the future, the containment equipment hatch will need to be cut to transfer the reactor vessel head. The equipment hatch would be reinstalled after the reactor vessel head replacement. The licensee plans to request a relief from testing requirements associated with repair of HNP's equipment hatch sleeve weld. Duke Energy plans to request relief from American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, 2007 Edition with 2008 Addenda requirements, as conditioned by 10 CFR 50.55a(b)(2)(ix)(J). The licensee plans to submit the proposed Relief Request in May of 2018.

No regulatory decisions or commitments were made at the meeting. No members of the public were in attendance and no comments were provided.
