This report is to serve as a follow-up information-source on the status of the.BVPS Unit 1 Motor-Driven Fire Pump [FP-P-1]. Presently, the pump motor is being rebuilt by Westinghouse and is being checked for any oil seal or aligmzent and binding problems. Une chronology of Motor-Driven Fire Pump [FP-P-1] problems is explained in the following.

On February 26, 1980, we submitted a Special Report to you which advised you that the [FP-P-1] pump upper motor bearing was very hot to touch and it was found smoking after an extended run.

From February 26, 1980 through September, 1980, the [FP-P-1] motor parts were ordered and the mater. bearings were replaced onsite.

On September 20, 1980, we submitted LER 80-069/01T to report that the [FP-P-1]

upper motor bearing had burned up after being rebuilt onsite. Debris was found in the cooling water strainer, so the pump was not inspected at this time. The motor was sent to Westinghouse to be rebuilt.

On November 1,1980, .the motor was returned from Westinghouse and was re-installed and subsequently burned up again. At this time, Westinghouse was contracted to ,

i rebuilt the motor again. Westinghouse was instructed to check.for a bent rotor 1

also. While the pump motor is offsite .the pump vill be removed and inspected for

. any abnormal problems.

A detailed investigation of 'the fire protection system, including pump ~ failure, is-to be completed and results submitted by December 31, 1980. The results of this fire protection study will be formalized by February 1, 1980. ,
