SUBJECT:

RANCHO SECO SHUTDOWN (UPDATE)

The plant reached a cold shutdown condition at 6:45 p.m. (PDT), June 9,19E9.

The plant is presently at approximately 120 F. The licensee is preparing to enter the reactor building to continue routine cold shutdown evolutions. The licensee is working towards reinstalling the refueling bridge into the reactor building. The bridge had been removed for refurbishment / modification. The l

licensee's shutdown contingency plan calls for the fuel to be moved to the spent fuel pool in the September 1989, timeframe.

The licensee has initiated the first reduction in force of approximately 390 I nonessential contractor clerical, engineering, and craft personnel. Region V has reviewed the list of affected personnel and has concluded that the reduction-in-force will not adversely affect the licensee's ability to maintain the plant in the present configuration. No further significant reductions are currently scheduled.

l Media interest continues.
