SUBJECT:

UNIT 1 STARTUP FOLLOWING AN EXTENDED OUTAGE This PN is for information only and is issued as a plant status update. On June 13,1988, at 1:15 p.m. (CDT), the licensee started up Unit 1 following a shutdown on May 25, 1988. Unit I had been shutdown to replace the steam driven feedwater turbine and pump. The feedwater turbine was severely damaged during the scheduled loss of off-site power when the steam valve failed to close and permitted the turbine to overspeed to destruction. Other maintenance activities were performed during this unscheduled outage.

Completion of testing at the 30 percent plateau is scheduled for June 19,

) 1988. Upon satisfactory completion of testing at the 30 percent plateau, the licensee will conmence testing at the 50 percent plateau. The licensee anticipates start of testing at the 50 percent plateau on June 20, 1988.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a press release.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the resident inspector at STP at 7:45 a.m. (CDT) June 14, 1988.
