SUBJECT:

SEISMIC MONITOR ALARM South Texas Project (STP), Unit 1 declared an unusual event at 9:49 a.m. (CDT)

Saturday, September 13, 1987, when two of six seismic monitors recorded )

deflections of about .01 g and alarmed. HL&P is treating the alarm as an actual event although backup seismic monitors did not record ground' motion.

HL&P has contacted national and regional seismic monitoring stations; however, j

none has indicated seismic activity in the STP area. HL&P has inspected the facility and the cooling impoundments for evidence of damage and found none.

The unusual event was terminated at 12:35 p.m. on September 13, 1987. HL&P 1

has issued a press release.

The licensee has issued a press release.

1 The state of Texas will be informed. I Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the SRI.

Region IV has informed NRR/PA.

This information has been confirmed with a licensee representative.
