The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

MAIN FEEDWATER PUMP FAILURE On May 25, 1988, during the transient following a scheduled loss of offsite power test, c steam-driven main feedwater pump failed. The turbine shaft sheared in the area of the coupling. Damage to the main feed pump turbine and the exhaust trunk is evident. The licensee is preparing to inspect the main l

condenser for damage. Repairs should take several days. No one was injured from the flying debris. The facility will remain shutdown while evaluating the cause of the failure.

I The loss of offsite power test was successful in that all test objectives were met. An NRC inspector is on site monitoring the licensee activities.

The licensee has informed the news media.

The state of Texas will be informed.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by a telephone call from an NRC inspector on site at 4 p.m., CDT, on May 25, 1988. Region IV has informed EDO, NRR, and PA.

This infonnation has been confirmed with a licensee representative.
