I .) This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

LOADED WEAPON, CARRIED BY LICENSEE EMPLOYEE, ADMITTED INTO LICENSEE PROTECTED AREA The secretary of a licensce security manager inadvertently admitted a loaded derringer into the protected area as she entered the site at 7:45 a.m. on May 2, 1991. The two-barreled, 32 caliber weapon was carried in the employee's purse and was not detected by security personnel, although the purse was scanned by the licensee's x-ray screening system.

The employee later remembered that the weapon was in her purse and reported the event to security personnel at approxima*ely 1040 a.m. The secretary had not entered any vital areas nor had she beer granted such access authority. The weapon is currently in the possession of plant security personnel.

The licensee reported the event to the NRC Operations Center at 11:16 a.m. COT and stated that the county sheriff has been notified. The Resident Inspector has also been informed.

The information presented herein has beten discussed with tN licensee, and is complete as of 1:15 p.m. CDT, May 2, 1991. The Region IV v!(ice, Arlington, Texas, Intends to dispatch an inspector to the site next week, Region IV has informed NRR.
