The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 48 HOURS At approximately 10:33 a.m. (CDT), July 28, 1988, the licensee tripped the reactor from 100 percent power as part of the planned 100 percent power plateau initial startup test program for South Texas Project, Unit 1 (STP-1).

The plant responded as predicted in the startup test program. Preliminary results indicate the test was satisfactory. STP-1 will remain shutdown in hot standby for approximately 48 hours5.555556e-4 days <br />0.0133 hours <br />7.936508e-5 weeks <br />1.8264e-5 months <br /> to make minor valve packing and other repairs identified during the startup test program. AT the completion of these repairs, the licensee plans to return to 100 percent power and resume initial startup testing at the 100 percent power plateau.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a press release.

The state of Texas will be informed.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 11:30 (CDT) July 28, 1988.
