f I #1A Cordova, IL 61242 Unusual Event Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergency XX_Not Applicable Suoject: SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS At 10:39 p.m. (CDT), June 29, 1989, while at 100 percent power, the Unit I turbine tripped, causing a reactor scram. The turbine trip is believed to be spurious. This event is similar to a reactor scram on December 5, 1988, when the Unit 1 turbine also tripped. The cause of that turbine trip was never determined.

The licensee is in the process of placing the reactor in cold shutdown to repair a degraded inner seal on the IB reactor circulation pump prior to startup.

Region !!! determined that the ptmp had been running with the degraded seal since early June and that the licensee had not provided interim instructions to the operating crew. In a letter to Region III on June 26, the licensee comitted to closely monitoring the seal and to replace the seal during the first shutdown of sufficient duration. The licensee expects to resume power operations on July 3, 1989.
