August 3, 1976 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT --

PNS-76-38 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance. The information presented in as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Facility: Commonwealth Edison Company, Dresden Units 1, 2, and 3 (DNs 50-10, 50-237, and 50-249), Morris Illinois 1~

Subject:

BOMB THREAT l

At 12:58 p.m. on August 3, 1976, an unidentified male called the Dresden Control Room and stated, "You have a bomb in your control 1

l room." The operator asked where the bomb was located, but the l

caller then hung up.

Nonessential persons were cleared from the control room and a thorough search of the control room and adjacent areas disclosed no unidentified materials.

Plant operation is continuing with no plans at present to shut down or reduce power.

The licensee stated that the FBI, state police, and civil defense MW' authorities were being notified. The licensee also stated that the call appeared to have originated within the station, since an h'

internal extension was used and receptionist did not recall routing any outside calls to that extension.

IE Region III (Glen Ellyn) received notificat1on of this event by telephone from the Assistant Superintendent at 1:55 p.m. on 1

August 3, 1976.

The IAT has been notified.
