CONTROL ROOM ATMOSPHERE DEGRADED BY ACID AND' CAUSTIC FUMES At approximately 1:15 a.m., on August 5,1977, while Unit Nos. 2 and 3 were operating and Unit No. 1 was shutdown, a chemical spill occurred in an area below the control room. While filling the sulfuric acid and caustic tanks in the make-up demineralizer area, the operators atten-tion was diverted and both tanks overflowed. Severe fuming resulted and these fumes entered the control room ventilation system, filling the control room with fumes. All control room personnel were placed

,in Scott Air Pack breathing apparatus.

The control room ventilation system.was switched to an alternate mode which cleared the control room of fumes in approximately 25 minutes, and control room personnel were able to operate without the Scott Air . .

Pack breathing apparatus.

The area in which the spill occurred was inaccessible due to the fumes,

. thus, the overflow continued until remote isolation of the system was accomplished. The event was teminated in approximately two hours.
