- \ Dmo November 12, 1985 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-II-85-108 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. FACILITY: Mississippi Power and Light Company Licensee Emergency Classification:

Grand Gulf Unit 1 Notification of Unusual Event Docket No. 50-416 Alert Port Gibson, Mississippi Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

INSPECTION OF DIESEL GENERATOR FOR DAMAGE Mississippi Power and Light (MP&L) personnel, assisted by representatives of Transamerica DeLaval Inc. (TDI), are disassembling and inspecting for damage one of Grand Gulf Unit l's two emergency diesel generators. This action is being taken as the result of an overspeed which occurred on November 7.

The overspeed condition, which lasted about 15 seconds before the generator was shut down, occurred while the machine was being tested. Although the cause of the overspeed is still under review, it is believed to be related to preventive maintenance performed earlier on the governor which controls the generator's speed.

Initial inspection indicates that one link pin bushing is cracked and that a main bearing and several connecting-rod bushings on the crankshaft end are damaged.

In addition to starting disassembly of the diesel generator, MP&L also has removed the g::vsrnor and is sending it to the vendor for inspection. Region II has informed the TDI task force of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulations, which plans to examine the machine once disassembly has been completed. Grand Gulf Unit 1 is out of service for scheduled maintenance.

MP&L is prepared to respond to media inquiries.

The State of Mississippi has been informed.

This information is current as of noon today.
