The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility: Mississippi Power and Light Company Grand Gulf, Unit Nos.1 and 2 Docket Nos.: 50-416 and 50-417 Grand Gulf, Mississippi

Subject:

HIGH WIND DAMAGE At 11:00 p.m., on April 17 high winds, not classified as a tornado by the Weather Bureau, caused extensive damage at the Grand Gulf nuclear site. Two units are under construction at this time. Unit No. 1 is -

50% complete. Unit No. 2 is 10% complete. i Several cranes fell damaging a partially erected cooling tower and a d partially erected containment liner. Several construction trailers and ,

shacks were completely destroyed. The 500 KV switchyard was damaged I

( extensively. The building used to store the Unit No.1 reactor inter- l nals was destroyed exrosing the internals. Certain warehouses and administrative buildings experienced extensive wind and water damage.

Six workers were injured, but the extent of their injuries is not known.

No deaths have been reported. The licensee did not know the damage in the surrounding area. The licensee is evaluating the extent and significance of the site damage.

The licens;) is responding to media inquiries. The State of Mississippi has been informed. A news release is not planned by the licensee nor NRC.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 10:30 a.m. on April 18.
