NARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-V-87-057 Date 8/24/87 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE, safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by Region V staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

POSSIBLE STATE EMPLOYEE STRIKE At approximately 10:00 AM, August 24, 1987, NRC learned from the Oregon State Agreement Program Director, Ray Paris, that the State Employee's Union voted to walk out (strike) beginning Sunday September 13, 1987. Mr. Paris stated that s his has happened before and the State had previously settled prior to the walk out. iite operation and emergency response of the radioactive materials program will be handled by qualified managers eithin that program as necessary.

The Trojan emergency response from the State of Oregon, should that.be necessary, will also be handled by qualified managers within that program and with additional assistance from U.S.D.0.E. as necessary.

The NRC, Region V has also offered additional technical assistance, as necessary, for radioactive materials and emergency response during the strike, should it materialize.

Region V was notified at 10:00 PDT August 24, 1987.
