Dear Chairman Jackson:

i Despite best efforts, the future operation of Maine Yankee is in doubt.

4 Today the Maine Yankee Board of Directors adopted a preservation plan which will significantly reduce the level of repair spending for the plant. The plan preserves the option to restart while the Board considers whether the plant should be permanently shut down. The Board also continues to pursue the possibility that another energy company might be interested in buying Maine Yankee.

Let me assure you that funding necessary for plant safety remains. We are committed to maintaining all staff and operations necessary for the safety and integrity of the site.

Both your staff and ours have invested considerable effort directed at restoring Maine Yankee. Through that effort we have made substantial progress and improvement. In that regard, I would particularly like to commend John Zwolinski, Dan Dorman, Rich Conte and Jimi Yerokun for their constructive, positive and objective approach to regulation in a difficult situation.

I will keep you informed of further developments.

') LO O Sincerely,

/a M. B. Sellman l i
