dated August 7,1997
Subject:
Decommissioning Funding Status Report Gentlemen:
On December 6,1996, Maine Yankee shut down the reactor and has not restarted the reactor or retumed to power operations.
In Reference (b) Maine Yankee informed the USNRC that the Board of Directors of Maine Yankee/
had decided to permanently cease operations at the Maine Yankee Plant and that fuel had been
/
permanently removed from the reactor. In accordance with 10CFR50.82(a)(2) the certifications in the letter modified the Maine Yankee Ucense to permanently withdraw Maine Yankee's authority to operate the reactor.
In accordance with the requirements of 10CFR 50.75(f), Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company hereby submits its report on the status of decommiss;oning funding for the year ending December 31,1998. The attached provides the requested information.
Maine Yankee's latest site specific decommissioning cost estimate is $547 million (mid-1998 dollars including contingency), which is based on a fixed price contract with Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation to dismantle and decontaminate the plant plus Maine Yankee's budget for decommissioning costs. Of this total amount $36.4 million is estimated for site restoration (greenfielding) and $153.6 million is estimated for spent fuel storage and management costs. As of December 31,1998, Maine Yankee has incurred $42.4 million of decommissioning expenditures.
