Additional Information on IE Bulletin 80 Masonry Wall Design Gentlemen:

As'a result of the site inspection of masonry walls at Maine Yankee by NRC staff representatives P. Sears and N. Chokshi on September 18-19, 1985, Maine Yankee was requested to provide additional information on our review of the Turoine Building EL 21'0" masonry wall adjacent to heat exchanger Hx E-4A, Reference (c). This letter and the attached sketches provide the requested information.

d[sh'ownorIt'he'attacneoskelchestheblockwalladjacenttoHxE-4Ais within 1"-4" of the heat exchanger and the top of the wall is only 4" above the centerline of the heat exchanger.

The consequence analysis performed to assess the impact of this wall collapsing during a seismic event. consisted of two tasks. First, the wall was assumed to pivot about its base and strike the heat exchanger with a line load along its longitudinal centerline. This impact resulted in a shell stress of approximately 4 ksi, well below the shell material allowable. Second, a detailed reinspection of the heat exchanger was performed by Yankee Nuclear Services Division on September 19, 1985, to ensure that there were no small attachments to the heat exchanger shell which could be damaged by block debris. This reinspection found no attachments which could be damaged (the heat excnMger was originally inspected on or about December 15, 1980).

MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER COMPANY United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page Two Attention: Mr. Edward J. Butcher, Jr., Acting Branch Chief MN-85-167 Based upon the' analysis and inspection described above, it was concluded

. that~ the failure of the block wall was acceptable since its collapse will not damage any safety-related equipment.
