Mr. Richard C. DeYoung, Director 509 Office of Inspection and Enforcement U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Mr. DeYoung:

This will bring you up to date on the actions Pacific Gas and Electric Company has taken in response to the matter cove ed in your letter of January 26, 1983, concerning the possibility that Ray Miller, Inc., may have supplied unqualified steel fittings and tubing to PGandE's Diablo Ctayon project:

o On January 26, 1983, the PGandE Quality Assurance Department informed NRC's Region V I&E Office that, in response to NRC IE Information Notice 83-01, PGandE had me.de an investigation and det + mined t'~ t Ray Miller, Inc., did not directly supply material to PGandt nor to any of the contractors presently working at the Diablo Canyon site.

o PGandE is now engaged in a thorough investigation to determine whether any previous contractors had received material from Ray Miller, Inc.

o -PGandE reviewed the list of suppliers identified in Attachment 1 to IE Information Notice 83-01 to determine whether any customers of Ray Miller, Inc., had supplied equipment for the Diablo Canyon proj ect. On January 27, we identified nine of the 126 customers of Ray Miller, Inc., as suppliers of equipment to the Diablo Canyon project. Of these it appears that four of the nine supplied equipment which might have involved material supplied by Ray Miller, Inc. Further investigation is underway to determine whether any such material was involved.

I am following our investigation of this matter personally and will see that appropriate action is taken if any of the material in question was delivered to the Diablo Canyon project.

I appreciate your bringing this matter to my personal attention.

Sincerely, M [-
