South Texas Project Units 1&2 Docket Hos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Fourth Interim Report Concerning Service Level I Paintings & Coatings On September 22, 1980 in accordance with 10CFR50.55(e), Houston 1ighting & Power Company (HL&P) notiff ed your office of an item related to the auality program for Service level I Coatings applied by Brown & Root to concrete and steel surfaces within the Unit I Reactor Containment Building.

Since the last report, field testing of coatings applied to concrete has been completed by an independent agency and test results have been evaluated. The test program was conducted in accordance with procedures described in the last report. As the result of the concrete coating tests, limited areas of nonconforming coating conditions were identified which consist primarily of insufficient adhesion. The nonconforming coating will be renoved and then reapplied in accordance with approved procedures.

The field testing program for coatings applied by Brown & Root to steel surfaces is still in progress. Additionally, Brown & Root is evaluating the acceptability of coatings applied to concrete and steel surfaces in the reactor cavity relative to  ;

anticipated operatical radiation levels.

The next interim report concerning this item wil_1 i be submitted by December 15, 1981. -
