'lhis letter is in response to a telephone conversation with Mr. Larry CampbcIl concerning the refcisced log number.
The Valtek valves that aro addressed in the NRC log referenced are unique to the South Texas Project.
The valves were designed for the specific service conditions that were given by the contractor at the time of quotation and subsequer' order, When the valves were installed, they met the original design specificatiott Vallek received a call from llouston LIE ting and Power in the fall of 1993 asking about the actuator h
forces. We learned that they were peiforming a back pressure test which was not defined by the origual specification. We provided thctn with information and analysis to determine if the design was adcquate to shut-oft in the back flow condition. Our analysis revealed that the design was not adequate for the back flow test enndillon Wile.k re-designed the trim to meet all requirements and built parts to retrofit in the valve. We also p'ovided field scavice assistance to Houston Lighting and Power, We have had follow-up conversations with the engineer working on thoe valves at the site; he has indicated that the valves are in good working ordct.
