Attention: Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Director

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-81/24, Interim Report #1, Damaged Reactor Mounting Channels s AECM-81/173 On April 16, 1981, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr. P. A.

Taylor, of your office, of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construction site. The deficiency concerns structural damage to reactor mounting channels sustained during shipment.

We have determined that the deficiency, if lef t uncorrected, could have adversely affected the safety of operations of the nuclear power plant over the lifetime of the plant, and is thus reportable under 10CFR50.55(e). Our investigatiou into reportability under 10CFR21 is continuing.

We expect to make our final report on October 12, 1981. Attached is Interim Report No.1.

j Yours truly, I

py J. P. McGaughy, Jr.

Attachment to AECM-81/173 Page 1 of 1 INTERIM REPORT NO. 1 FOR PRD-81/24 I. Description of the Deficiency Morrison-Knudsen informed our NSSS supplier that the reactor mounting channels installed in Panel Q1H22P118 were damaged as a result of handling during shipment to the jobsite. Since the channels had to be replaced Morrison-Knudsen recommended that they be increased in strength at the same time. Morrison-Knudsen indicated that the structural damage sustained by the reactor channels during shipment could have adversely affected the safe operation of the plant.

Systems affected are the High Pressure Core Spray (HPCS) and HPCS Diesel Generator Systems. This deficiency has been determined to be reportable under 10CFR50.55(e). Investigation is continuing into the applicability of 10CFR21.

II. Approach to Resolution of the Problem The cause of the damage sustained by the reactor mounting channels during shipment has not been determined. It has been determined, however, that the damage was limited to Panel Q1H22P118. All channels have been replaced and strengthened. Actions to prevent recurrence bave not been determined.

III. Status of Proposed Resolution The NSSS supplier is in the process of obtaining information from Morrison-Knudsen which will enable them to determine the cause of the deficiency and actions necessary to preclude recurrence.

IV. Reason Why A Final Report Will Be Delayed The NSSS supplier has not completed its investigation.

V. Date When Final Report Will Be Submitted October 12, 1981
