Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-81/15, Status Report #1, Minor Corrosion to SSW Pump AECM-81/123 On February 25, 1981, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr. P.

A. Taylor, of your office, of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construction site. The deficiency con:arns minor corrosion detected on the internals of the Standby Service Water (SSW)

System "B" Pump.

We have not completed our investigation to determine reportability. We have, however, determined that 10CFR21 is not applicable since the component has not been offered to MP&L for acceptance. We expect to submit a final report by September 9, 1981.

Yours truly, J. P. McGaughy, Jr.

Attach =ent A to AECM-8;/123 Page 1 of 1 STATUS REPORT NO. 1 TO PRD-81/15 I. Description of the Deficiency Minor acid etching of the SSW "B" pump inter ediate bowl was detected during reassembly of the pump following repairs to various pump components. ,

This deficiency is applicable to Unit 2.

II. Approach to Resolution'of the Problem An investigation is to bd ' conducted to determine:

a. The cause of the deficiency;
b. The extent of the deficiency; Based on the results of above investigation, an evaluation will be made to determine:
a. Reportability under 10CFR50.55(e);
b. Corrective actions to preclude recurrence;
c. Remedial actions to correct deficiencies identified during the investigation; III.. Status of Proposed Resolution The deficiency was caused by the addition of sulfuric acid to SSW Basin "B".. The amount of acid added reduced the pH of the basin water significantly enough to cause corrosion in the Standby Service Water pumps and on the concrete surfaces below the basin water line.

'The extent of the deficiency has not been fully determined. Our Constructor is presently investigating other items, i.e. piping and valves, which.could possibly have been effected by the reduced pH water.. The exposed _ concrete has been inspected and no damage was reported which would af fect structural' integrity.

The affected SSW pumps in Basin "B" have been refurbisned by the pump manufacturer. . The'sinor corrosion on the "B" pump has been determined to be ecsmetic only.

IV. Reason Why A Final-Report Will Be Delayed The investigation into.the extent'of the deficiency has not been.

completed and. as .a -result, all corrective actions have not ' been established.

V. . Date~When A Final' Report Will Be Submitted A final' report will be submitted by September 9,1981.
