Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-80/43, Status Report, Undersized Socket Welds AECM-80/190 On July 18, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light Compary notified Mr. F. Cantrell of your office of a Potentially Reportable Deft-ciency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construction site. The deficiency concerns ASME III socket welds which were identified during IE Inspectica 50-416/80-13.

An investigation was initiated by our Constructor to determine the extent of the condition. A total of 513 ASME Section III socket welds were reinspected and 53 of these welds were identified as being in noncompliance with the ASME Code,Section III, Division I, Sections NB, NC, and ND-4400. Calculations performed by our Architect / Engineer show that, although the welds in question were in noncompliance to the ASME Code minimum size criteria, all welds were structurally adequate. Thus, the preliminary results of the investigation are that there is no adverse impact on the safety of operationn of the plant. Further details are documented by Bechtel Managemen: Cor-rective Action Report (MCAR) No. 95.

However, our investigation is not complete. The Constructor has scheduled an inspection of all accessible documented safety-related ASME III Class 1, 2, and 3 socket welds. The evaluation of safety i=plicaticus and implementation of corrective action, if required, is contingent on the results of the inspection. We expect to determine reportability and submit a final report by February 4, 1981.
