Suite 3100 Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Attention: Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Director

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-80/04, Status Report #3, Effects of Loss of Site Power on Rod Position Indication and Neutron Monitoring AECM-80/163

References:

1) AECM-80/66, 4/3/80
2) AECM-80/105, 5/21/80 On March 17, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light discussed the subject condition with Mr. F. Cantrell of your office. Based on this discussion, MP&L agreed to process this matter as a potentially reportable deficiency. This deficiency pertains to the Loss of Site Power (LOSP) accident and its attendant effects on Rod Position In-formation System (RPIS) and Neutron Monitoring System (NMS).

This deficiency is still under investigation due to the complex nature of the issue and its relationship to other investigations asso-ciated with NRC IE Bulletin No. 79-27, " Loss of Non-Class 1E Instru-mentation and Control Power System Bus During Operation", and NRC Regulatory Guide 1.97, " Instrumentation for Light-Water-Cooled Nuclear Power Plants to Assess Plant Ccnditions During and Following an Ac-cident". Our Architect / Engineer and NSSS Supplier are currently eval-uating the aforementioned Bulletin and Regulatorf Guide.

We expect to provide a determination on reportability and final report by December 30, 1980.

Yours truly,

/f ezw s far J. P. McGaughy, Jr. /
