U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II 101 Marietta St., N. W., Suite 3100 Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Attention: Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Director

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-80/06, Status Report #2, Modification to Dragon Valve Manifolds AECM-80/119 The deficiency described in this report concerns modifications to certain two and five valve manifolds supplied by Dragon Valves, Inc. The deficiency was investigated in May of 1977 and filed under Bechtel MCAR-GGNS No. 26. That investigation concluded that the deficiency was not reportable under 10 CFR 50.55(e).

In a recent site inspection, Mr. M. Gouge of your office reviewed the above referenced MCAR. In that inspection of March 6, 1980, Mr. Gouge conclud-ed that this deficiency concerning Dragon Valves was improperly evaluated.

This inspection and questioning of the rationale used to determine reportability reopened this issue.

The background information and history of this deficiency was provided to you in our report,,AECM-80/69, dated April 4, 1980. Our re-evaluation of this matter is as yet incomplete. Valve manifolds L.ccl~ed in this matter are desig-ated with Mark Nos. J-21-2N and J-21-5N, two and five salve manifolds, respec-tively. Our findings indicate that none of the five valve manifolds are employed in safety related systems. Our findings also indicate that some of the suspect two valve manifolds are employed in the Standby Liquid Contrcl (SLC) Systen, a safety related system. We are currently investigating the application of these valve manifolds at GGNS and the related safety impact of this deficiency.
