Page 1 of 1 Docket No.: 50-338 Report flo. : LER 79-010/03L-0 Description of Event:

On 1/27/79 while performing routine calibration of RMS-159, Containment Particulate Radiation fionitor, it was found that the detec tor read low for a known radiation level. The monitor was declared inoperable for RCS leakage detection and the appropriate grab samples were taken as required by the Action Statement of T.S. 3.4.6.1.

Pr_obable Consequences of Event:

RMS-159, Containment Particulate Radiation Monitor, is utilized as Reactor Coolant System leakage detection system during Mode 1 operation. Two other systems were available and grab samples were taken and this monitor was restored to operation within the 30 day period required by the Action statement (T.S. 3.4.1.6). Therefore, the health and safety of the general public were not endangered.

Cause of Occurrence:

This event was caused by a detector high voltage setting that was too low.

Immediate Corrective Action:

The immediate corrective action was the adjustment of the detector high voltage so that proper readings were obtained for a known radiation source.

The instrument was calibrated satisf Lorily.

Scheduled Corrective Action:

None Action Taken to Prevent Recurrence:

None
