Page 1 of 1 Docket No. 50-338 Report No. LER 83-027/03L-0 Description of Event On May 5, 1983, with Unit 1 in Mode 1, one of the operable headers of the Control Room Bottled Air Pressurization System was found to have a lower than required pressure (2290 psig vs. 2300 psig or greater).

There are four pressurized bottled air headers available, 2 headers for each Unit and 42 bottles in each header. With either Unit in Mode 4 or above, two headers (84 bottles total) are required to be operable.

At the time of this event, one bottled air header on Unit I was not operable as it was being pressurized. Consequently one bottled air header on each unit was being utilized to satisfy the requirements of the Unit 1 Technical Specifications.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence Operability of the Control Room Bottled Air Pressurization System ensures that breathable air is available to maintain a positive interior pressure in the Control Room in the event the outside air is contaminated. Since the System was restored to full operability within the time limit of the Action Statement of T.S. 3.7.7.1, the health and safety of the public were not affected.

Cause of Event Prior to the event, the Unit 1 "A" header was in service with a pressure of 2350 psig recorded at 0400 on May 5 and the isolated Unit 1 "B" header was being pressured. The compressor being utilized malfunctioned at 0610 and its relief valve opened decreasing the "B" header pressure. The "A" header pressure was observed to be 2290 paig at 0800. It is suspected that leakage occurred when the compressor malfunctioned.

Immediate Corrective Action Upon discovery of the low pressure condition, the Unit 1 "A" header was isolated and the remaining available Unit 2 header was placed in service. The affected header was inspected, however no evidence of leu & age was found.

Scheduled Corrective Action No further corrective action is required.

Actions Taken to Prevent Recurrence No further action is required.

Generic Implications This was an isolated event; therefore there are no generic implications.
