Docket No. 50-206 NRC Requirements for Auxiliary Feedwater System San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 By letter dated November 15, 1979, you forwarded the NRC staff's evaluation of the Auxiliary Feedwater System (AFWS) at San Onofre Unit 1. to your letter set forth (1) generic requirements applicable to most Westinghouse-designed operating plants, and (2) plant-specific requirements applicable only to San Onofre Unit 1. Enclosure 2 to your letter contained a generic request for additional information regarding auxiliary feedwater system flow requirements. You requested that we evaluate each of the requirements contained in Enclosure 1 with respect to the existing design and procedures for the San Onofre Unit 1 AFWS and advise you of the results of the evaluation, including associated schedules and commitments necessary to comply with the requirements, by December 26, 1979. In addition, you indicated that we may provide our response to the items in Enclosure 2 at that time.

By letter dated December 21, 1979, you requested additional infor mation concerning the applicability of current analyses of a main steam line break or main feedwater line break assuming early initiation of auxiliary feedwater flow with a failure to limit flow to the affected steam generator.

You requested that we provide the requested information by January 10, 1980.

As discussed with members of the Nuclear Reactor Regulation Bulletins and Orders Task Force, we plan to provide our response to Enclosure 1 of your November 15, 1979 letter by January 10, 1980. In addition, we indicated that Westinghouse has been contacted to assist us in performing the analyses required to provide the information requested by Enclosure 2 of your November 15, 1979 letter and that requested by your December 21, 1979 letter. Based on initial discussions with Westinghouse, we stated that it may require from six to eight months to provide the requested information. Currently, we are continuing to work with Westinghouse in order to improve on this schedule and will advise you by January 10, 1980 of our schedule for providing the requested information.
