D. M. Crutchfield, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 5 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket 50-206 Puxiliary Feedwater System Review San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 During a telephone discussion on July 29, 1982 with members of the Regulatory Staff, we were requested to provide information regarding the subject NRC review as it relates to the requirements of IE Bulletin No. 80-04 dated February 8, 1980. Specifically, we were requested to resolve the NRC concerns with respect to runout protection of the motor driven auxiliary feedwater system (AFWS) pump on low discharge pressure. The purpose of this letter is to reply to the NRC expressed concern.

By letter dated March 6, 1981, we provided the NRC with a submittal which trans

.mitted the information outstanding at that time required for the review of the AFWS automatic initiation.

Included in that transmittal was an indication that runout protection would be installed on the existing motor driven AFWS pump.

This installation was completed prior to startup in June, 1981.

By letter dated March 10, 1982, we committed to provide a third AFWS motor driven pump in order to resolve TMI Long Term requirements which would be installed following SEP Integrated Assessment.

This is to inform you that pump runout protection on low discharge pressure similar to that installed on the existing pump will be provided for the new AFWS pump.

If you have any questions or desire additional information, please contact me.

Very truly yours, 001 8208060214 820803 PDR ADOCK 05002O6 P
