20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Environmental Qualification of Electrical Equipment San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 Your letter dated February 1, 1982 requested additional information regarding our environmental qualification program. You requested some clarification on how we were addressing beta radiation on equipment other than exposed cable inside containment.

As indicated in the NRC's DOR Guidelines, of the general classes of electrical equipment, cable is considered the most vulnerable to damage from beta radiation.

Other electrical equipment is usually surrounded by casing material which prevents the intrusion of beta radiation. Beta radiation was not included in the radiation analysis for equipment such as motors, valve actuators and transmitters inside containment which have metallic covers.

Beta radiation was only included in the analysis for exposed cable.

If you have any additional requests, please let me know.

Very truly yours, 8203120176 820310 PDR ADOCK 05000206
