AECM-82/287, 6/21/82 $ t. :

On May 21, 1982, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr. R. Butcher, of your office, of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf .

Nuclear Station (GGNS) construction site. The deficiency concerns an error in the calculations for impingement loads on targets during high energy pipe line breaks.

This deficiency was reported by MP&L under the provlstons of 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR21 and by Bechtel Power Corporation under the provisions of 10CFR21.

Our referenced Final Report, stated that, based on the evaluations performed to date, three (3) items were af fected.

One of the actions to prevent recurrence consisted of revising and reissuing Specification 9645-M-195.0. Following the revision, a walkdown was pe rformed by our Architect / Engineer to identify and evaluate new targets.

This walkdown identified an additional target, Reactor Pressure Vessel Head Spray piping 6" DBA-30 (Q1E12). To protect this target, jet barrler C-A-1842 has been designed and the design issued for f abrication and installation.

This barrier will be installed prior to nuclear heatup on Unit 1.

You s tr ly, 6

J. P. McGaughy, Jr.
